Course Description
This IoT introduction course is targeted at individuals who want to understand what the Internet of Things is, how it evolves from the Internet, what the core technologies and systems are and how it is implemented.
The course has 3 parts:
• What is IoT?
• The Technologies Underlying IoT
• The 4 Pillars of IoT
We start by showing the step by step transformation of the Internet as we know it to the Internet of Things. After this we take an in depth look at the many technologies that are part of any IoT implementation, describing their functions, technology requirements and how they are all combined into business solutions and applications. Finally, we recap what we have learned providing a high level view of the 4 pillars that make up any complete IoT solution.
What am I going to get from this course?
Understand what the Internet of Things is, identify the technologies that make up the internet of things and understand how the four major components are put together to create IoT solutions and applications.
Prerequisites and Target Audience
What will students need to know or do before starting this course?
No technical knowledge is needed but it helps to have some high level understanding about the Internet and technologies like computers, the web, internet communication, cloud services and personal computer and mobile phone applications. These will all be explained but prior understanding will simplify the total understanding.
Who should take this course? Who should not?
Anyone who wants an easy introduction to the Internet of Things and gain understanding of the technology components and how they are combined to create IoT solutions, applicatios and businesses.
Curriculum
Module 1: Introduction to IoT

Lecture 1
What is IoT?
14:02
Covers the opportunities of IoT and shows the transformation of the Internet to the Internet of Things and describing the 4 components of IoT. After completion student will understand how IoT relates to the Internet and what the four components of IoT are.
Module 2: The Technologies underlying IoT
43:41
Lecture 2
Chip and Board Technologies and IoT Communication
18:00
This section describes the technologies used in the first two parts of IoT (Device and Connectivity) with particular emphasis of what makes a product or system a Thing in the IoT world. It also describes the current state and trends in all technology areas. Using plenty of technology and supplier examples, the discussion covers business as well as application and solution implications. After completion the student will understand the chip and connectivity technologies used in IoT and be able to identify key suppliers in each area.
Lecture 3
IoT Platform and IoT Application Technologies (IoT Platforms and Applications)
25:41
This section describes the technologies used in the last two parts of IoT (IoT Platforms and Applications) with particular emphasis of what makes a product or system a Thing in the IoT world. It also describes the current state and trends in all technology areas. Using plenty of technology and supplier examples, the discussion covers business as well as application and solution implications. After completion the student will understand the platform and application technologies used in IoT and be able to identify key suppliers in each area.
Module 3: 4 Pillars of IoT
